Amy Williams runs May + Co, an online space selling lovingly sourced and restored 20th-century vintage furniture and homeware.
For May + Co, it all began with a sofa (almost). In her previous role, Amy had worked as a Virtual Assistant for small businesses. Although she enjoyed it, she was not truly passionate about it; she wanted a small business of her own that she could put her heart into. This is where the sofa comes in. After buying, flipping, and selling a sofa on which she made a good profit, Amy realised her passion for furniture could become her day job.
The biggest hurdle for Amy as a business owner was finding a premises which she could grow into. Starting from a garage, May + Co soon moved into a shared space and subsequently Amy felt stuck in a situation she couldn’t get out of. Having a larger space would facilitate May + Co’s growth and development.
So, thinking outside of the box, Amy offered to clear the place for a lower rent. The May + Co shop was born!
Amy loves many things about owning her own business. But her favourite thing? The freedom. Being able to try new things and create what she wants to create is something she has never experienced in a role before, but something she would never give up now.
Straying away from the logical planning usually advised to new entrepreneurs, Amy suggests rather that aspiring business owners ‘listen to their gut’. Amy has always done what she thought she should do, but now she asks herself ‘does this sit right with me? At May + Co, your initial feeling is key; Amy’s fearless and adaptable approach to business has got them to where they are today.
